The words hot tub and jacuzzi are often used interchangeably. Given this, many people assume that they are both names for the same thing. But is this the case? Are hot tubs and jacuzzis the same?

The answer to this question is a little more complicated than what it may first seem. While they technically are the same in some respects, in others they are not.

If we get into the technicalities of it, a jacuzzi can be called both a hot tub and a jacuzzi, but a hot tub should only be called a hot tub.

Yes, this may seem confusing but we will explain why this is the case shortly!

In this article, we will be exploring this question in more detail to provide you with a definitive answer.

We will be taking a look at what defines both a hot tub and a jacuzzi to inform you of their similarities and differences.

What Is A Hot Tub?

Most people are familiar with what a hot tub is. However, if you are unsure of what exactly defines a hot tub, let us explain.

Hot tubs are most commonly found at water parks, swimming pools, spas, hotels, and in people’s backyards. They are a lot smaller than a swimming pool and are not used to swim in.

Hot tubs are large tubs of water that are usually made from durable plastics. The water it contains is heated and pleasant to lounge in.

They can vary in size quite significantly. The average hot tub can usually hold around four to eight people, depending on its size.

They are mainly square in shape, though you can purchase them in other shapes, such as circular.

The phrase “hot tub” was first used in the seventies and hot tubs have significantly improved from the wooden materials they used to be made from. Hot tubs use jets and whirlpool systems to heat and move the water.

Depending on the type of hot tub you choose, it can be equipped with some of the following elements:

  • Massaging jets
  • Built-in seating
  • Lighting
  • Audio – MP3 or Bluetooth
  • Waterfalls
  • Headrests

As you can see, there are many technologically advanced hot tubs available to purchase nowadays.

Hot tubs are heated and are often used in a social or spa environment. They are a fun addition to a garden, but they can also provide relaxation for the mind and your muscles too.

You may have heard of hot tubs being referred to as spas. This phrase derives from Europe, in particular Belgium.

The town of Spa in Belgium was home to natural springs. Since then, the word spa has been used more commonly to describe a hot tub here in the US.

The hot tub idea is not a completely new concept. Forms of hot tubs were used back in Ancient Rome.

The Romans used to have Roman baths which were heated. These public spaces were very common and involved relaxing in small, heated pools.

In addition to this, in Asia, they also have similar bathing practices. While these baths were significantly different from the hot tubs we are familiar with today, it is easy to see how hot tubs were modeled on this idea.

What Is A Jacuzzi?

Now that we have covered what a hot tub is, you are probably wondering how a Jacuzzi is different.

On the surface, a jacuzzi sounds and looks like a hot tub. What makes a Jacuzzi different from a standard hot tub is that a Jacuzzi is a brand of hot tub!

Many people may not realize this because the phrases jacuzzi and hot tub are used interchangeably.

But technically, a hot tub should only be called a jacuzzi if it is made by the brand Jacuzzi. If it is not made by Jacuzzi, it is just a standard hot tub.

It is similar to the way many people will use champagne to describe any sparkling wine! Or how people call non-branded cola, Coke!

To give you some background information on the company, Jacuzzi was founded in 1978 and is a brand that focuses on the creation of hot tubs, saunas, pools, and baths.

It was in 1968 that Jacuzzi created the first hot tub. However, it was not like the hot tubs you are used to today.

It was more similar to a bathtub with water jets. It was created to help alleviate the symptoms of arthritis. In 1970, Jacuzzi created a larger hot tub that is more similar to the ones we are used to today.

As Jacuzzi was one of the first companies to create hot tubs, it is easy to see why hot tub and jacuzzi have become interchangeable.

As they were the first company, they led the way in this field, and their products are still ever popular and used today.

As you can see, hot tubs and jacuzzis are the same things.

However, Jacuzzi is a manufacturer of hot tubs and was the one who initially came up with the idea. This is why people often call hot tubs, Jacuzzis.

Although a Jacuzzi is technically only a jacuzzi if it is made by the brand, many people still use it to describe any brand of hot tub.

Many other brands create hot tubs in addition to Jacuzzi, such as Renewal, Hellenic, and Just Tubs.

If you are looking for a high tech hot tub that uses the newest and latest gadgets, Jacuzzi as a brand may not be the most suitable option for you.

While they produce high quality and fantastic hot tubs, their models do not contain things such as audio and Bluetooth.

Their products do contain things such as massaging jets, LED lighting, and waterfalls, however.

Now that you know the differences between a hot tub and a Jacuzzi, you can inform your friends and family about this.

The next time that they use the word Jacuzzi to describe a standard hot tub, you can tell them why this is incorrect!
