Farmer Saves Freezing Baby Cow with Hot Tub

In Carroll County, Indiana United States, a farmer named Dean Gangwer found a newborn calf within a snow-bed. He realized that there was likely a missing baby cow, from his latest litter of new born cows. Dean decided to take matters into his own hands and do everything he could, to save the life of the baby cow.

She decided to go off by herself, which a lot of cows do, they want to be alone, big old pile of snow, I found this calf laying in there.

It was obvious to Dean, that the calf was in jeopardy of dying, as the calf’s body temperature appeared dangerously below average.

Indiana Farmer Dean Gangwer Saves Baby Calf using a Hot TubThe calf was reported to be hardly breathing at all, and had trouble keeping it’s eyes open. These are all very reliable indicators, of what might come next.

Then, he was able to put the calf into the bed of his truck, and bring him to his home, nearby.

Upon arrival, Gangwer knew that the only chance the cow might have, would be to get it warm as quickly as possible, and this was still a long shot. The choice was made, to put the calf into a warm hot tub.

This in itself, is an amazing decision, as the majority of people, would never think to do this. For the next few hours, Dean and the calf, whom is now named Leroy, sat together and relaxed inside the hot tub.

I jumped in fully dressed, held Leroy up so he didn’t drown, and him and I had a nice bath for an hour, so we both came out warm and I think the end story’s gonna be great for him.

Finally, he and Leroy got out of the tub, then he dried the calf off and covered Leroy using an electrical blanket, to provide even more body warmth.

It took about 36 hours, before the calf’s body temperature returned to normal sustainable levels.

Leroy’s officially done hot-tubbing. Some sunbathing is definitely in his future out in the grass, but definitely his hot tub days are done.
